Requirements: What is Proof of Identity

In California, acceptable forms of identification for notary services include:

  • California Driver’s License: Current or issued within the last five years.
  • U.S. Passport: Current or issued within the last five years.
  • Foreign Passport: If accompanied by a valid U.S. visa or entry stamp.
  • Other State Driver’s Licenses: Current or issued within the last five years.
  • Federal or Tribal Government IDs: Issued by a recognized authority.

Important Notes:

  • The identification must contain a photograph, description, signature, and an identifying number.
  • Notaries are required to carefully compare the presented identification to the signer’s appearance.
