What Is a California Apostille?
An apostille is a certificate used to authenticate the origin of a public document for international use.
For a California document, the apostille verifies the authenticity of the relevant public official’s signature, the capacity in which that official acted, and, when applicable, the seal or stamp on the document.
An apostille does not verify or approve the contents of the underlying document.
That distinction is important and is consistent with both California’s current apostille guidance and the Hague Apostille Convention.
Depending on the country where the document will be used, additional authentication or embassy/consulate legalization may also be required.

Public records such as properly certified vital records generally follow a different process and should not simply be notarized as a substitute for obtaining the correct certified record.

4. Additional Legalization, When Required
Documents being used outside the Hague Apostille Convention may require additional authentication or embassy/consulate legalization depending on the receiving country and authority.
The U.S. Department of State distinguishes between apostille certificates for Hague Convention countries and authentication certificates for non-Hague countries.

California Apostille for International Use
The destination country matters.
For countries participating in the Hague Apostille Convention, an apostille generally replaces the older multi-step legalization process for qualifying public documents.
The Hague Conference explains that the apostille certifies the origin of a public document and does not authenticate its underlying contents.
For countries outside the Hague Convention, additional authentication and embassy or consulate legalization may be required.

Do you provide same-day California apostille service?
Same-day and rush options may be available for eligible documents. Availability depends on the document, processing requirements, timing, and destination.
Can someone else submit my document for apostille?
Yes. California states that an individual may request an apostille on behalf of another person; the requester does not have to be related to the person named in the document. However, if the document needs to be notarized the signer must be present.
Can California apostille a document written in another language?
California currently states that a document may be apostilled even if the underlying document is in another language, provided the notarization—when a notarization is involved the notary and signer can communicate in english.
Does an apostille verify what the document says?
No. An apostille authenticates the relevant signature, official capacity, and seal or stamp. It does not validate the contents of the underlying document.
